European Day of languages aims to encourage language learning and promote language diversity across Europe. To celebrate this year’s European Day of Languages, the IVS Language Ambassadors organised activities throughout the week to inspire other pupils to learn languages.
Spanish and German Taster Class
Girls in I Senior now have the opportunity to study Spanish or German in addition to French. To familiarise the girls in 7 Junior before they make their choice, we hosted a Spanish and German taster session where we played some fun games and activities in each language. It was an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for us all.
Spanish Introduction Class
We also spent time with 1-4 Junior where we introduced them to some simple animals and introductions in Spanish. They had a lot of fun playing games and we hope to plan more opportunities to share our knowledge with them as they move through school. The juniors were incredibly enthusiastic and eager to learn, which was an enjoyable sight to see for us all.
Whole School Assembly
To close off the fun-filled week, we finished on Friday with a whole school assembly about why languages are so important to our society. We listened to an interesting interview from our former pupil, Jane Somerset, who is now studying Spanish and Linguistics at Edinburgh University. She had some great advice for taking languages beyond the classroom and the doors that can open for you if you persevere.
Reflecting on her recent travelling adventures around the world, Jane said, “I think it’s been invaluable to be able to speak to lots of people, meet lots of new people, and have experiences that I never would have otherwise”.
Adiós! Au Revoir! Tschüss!
