Rianne catalogues books at library club
At St Margaret's School for Girls, the library is a hub of activity thanks to the dedicated efforts of its library prefects. Sylvie and Lena, two such prefects, shared their experiences and insights into their roles, shedding light on the atmosphere they've fostered within the school's library.
Sylvie outlined the multifaceted duties of a library prefect. From managing book checkouts to curating engaging displays, her role extends far beyond only shelving books. "I wanted to be able to help maintain [the library] and help promote it,” she shared.
Reflecting on memorable events, Sylvie recalls the "breakfast with a book" event, an event that showcased the library's welcoming ambiance: “the library was so quiet and relaxed meanwhile back in the kitchen we were having a debate about how to cut melon and people were running around with half empty boxes of pastries and creating nice food displays while laughing and chatting.”
For Sylvie, being a library prefect isn't just about administrative tasks; it's a lesson in teamwork and responsibility. "We interact mainly by taking in and out books for people," she notes, highlighting the social dimension of her role and the friendships it fosters.

Lena echoes Sylvie's sentiments, emphasising why she enjoys contributing to the library's growth and fostering a culture of reading. "I love working in the library," Lena shares, underscoring her dedication to cultivating an environment where books and reading are celebrated.
Like Sylvie, Lena enjoys the communal spirit of library events, citing the success of "breakfast with a book" as a testament to the library's appeal. "It was amazing to see how keen everyone was to use the library," she reflects, emphasising the event's role in fostering a love for reading.
Moreover, Lena notes the personal growth she's experienced as a library prefect, from expanding her reading repertoire to embracing the responsibility within the school community.
