Inspiring Insights on UN World Water Day

To mark UN World Water Day on Saturday 22nd March, we were delighted to welcome Tanya Nhliziyo from WaterAid to our Sustainability Café on Friday 21st. Tanya spoke to pupils about WaterAid’s vital work in helping the 703 million people still living without clean water close to home and the 1 in 4 children who will be living in areas with severe water shortages by 2040.

WaterAid focuses on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), supporting communities through education and the installation of sustainable water systems. Pupils were particularly moved by stories of girls unable to attend school due to illness from dirty water or the long daily journeys needed to collect fresh water - something many of us take for granted.

The session sparked thoughtful discussions and insightful questions, particularly from those involved in the STEMovators Challenge in 7J. Emily (7J) reflected: "We learnt WaterAid’s three goals - clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene. We heard about people facing challenges without clean water. All in all, I think Tanya’s talk was inspiring for all of us."

At St Margaret’s, we recognise the value of guest speakers in broadening our pupils’ perspectives. By hearing first-hand about global challenges and real-world solutions, our pupils gain a deeper understanding of important issues and feel empowered to make a difference.

We are grateful to Tanya and WaterAid for sharing their insights and inspiring our pupils to think about the impact of clean water worldwide.
