What are the benefits of an all girls’ education?

Extensive research and academic results show that a single-sex education offers significant strengths and benefits and is very effective for girls, allowing them to excel in all areas of the curriculum. It is our belief that the single-sex setting helps to create a supportive but challenging learning environment: we want all our girls to be confident individuals.

Research by the Girls’ School Association (GSA) indicates that girls thrive academically and personally when they feel confident and happy. In an all-girls' setting, teachers can create an environment that encourages participation and progress. With only girls in the classroom or on the sports field, pupils have the freedom to be themselves and explore all available opportunities.

The GSA, representing leading independent girls' schools in the UK, emphasises that such environments foster teamwork, motivation and multitasking. These skills help girls become successful leaders. Notably, girls in GSA schools are almost twice as likely to take physics and chemistry at Higher compared to their peers in co-educational schools. Additionally, 80% more girls continue with modern languages, and 70% more with mathematics.

About St Margaret’s School for Girls

St Margaret’s School offers a supportive and welcoming environment, where we strive to nurture each girl to achieve her potential in both the curricular and extra-curricular life of the school. Our school values of respect, equality, hard work, ambition and community are at the heart of all that we do.

In a bright, spacious well-equipped building, with secure grassed playground facilities, from the first day of nursery we are nurturing the communication skills, resilience, self-confidence and global outlook necessary for our pupils to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Our girls are socially aware and are prepared to cope with the challenges of the competitive world beyond school. They are encouraged to show concern for those in the wider community within and beyond Aberdeen. Girls are taught to value themselves as individuals and to show respect and consideration when working with others; to develop a sense of fun and a sense of responsibility; to have a positive attitude; and to be flexible and adaptable.

We believe that a single-sex education offers girls the space in which their intellectual and physical identity can blossom, a space which is free from stereotype, full of challenge and rich with opportunity and care. It is in this sort of environment that girls can develop the self-esteem and confidence which will enable them to fulfil their potential and make a positive impact on the world.

“It’s been lovely to see how happy both our daughters are at St Margaret’s School. The quality of teaching paired with the pastoral care truly is excellent. We really couldn’t ask for a better school for our daughter.”
